News From the Diasporic Kitchen
“Until I was in my 20s, the classic for bread in Germany was sausage and cheese in the evening, somehow. Sometimes also a cucumber.”
Simone Dede Ayivi and Accomplices are turning on the oven. We have come together to cook and have collected recipes, shopping lists and entire cuisines. All of this comes with the accompanying stories about family connections and processes of cutting the cord, forced culinary integration, fake fufu, the hummus paradox and Köfte exoticism. We are positioning ourselves against the German aversion to caraway and garlic, hoe through the potato system and pull the cover off of a few different pots. We will present something difficult to digest as light fare and took a shared look into the cooking pots. Together, we will write the theatrical cookbook of our culinary migration heritage and ask ourselves: what will we cook tomorrow?
In Homecooking, Simone Dede Ayivi stands in the kitchen on stage as a performer. Through video and audio pieces, people from a variety of communities, generations and places share their stories and recipes.
